Mar 01, 2007 at 06:45 PM
Ever since the days of the constitutive evangelization, the Church in Latin America has continued to press forward, overcoming numerous challenges and obstacles in order to proclaim Christ, Redeemer and Reconciler of humanity. The road traveled since the first Bishops' councils of South America and those of North America, respectively centered in Lima and Mexico, is truly remarkable. This feat of evangelization has reached millions of people on the soil of what, from the perspective of someone with faith, has come to be called the "Continent of Hope."

Today is a celebration of faith, hope and love. Today is the feast in which we celebrate the great mercy of God who in His love has looked upon us and has opened the way to the fullness of reconciliation, already begun in this earthly journey, even though with its tribulations, but which, after the transformation, finds its way towards the horizon of true plenitude and joy.

Rome is coming out from the peacefulness due to the massive exodus of its inhabitants. As it happens every year, pilgrims were not scared by the hot roman summer. Nevertheless, the year 2003 is different. There is an air of celebration. It is the 25th anniversary of the election of Cardinal Karol Wojtyla as the 263rd successor to St. Peter, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ.

Dec 03, 2000 at 12:00 AM
At the celebration of the Immaculate Conception of 1975, a little more than a year after the closure of the Synod, the Pope promulgated the apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi. He did so explicitly as the Successor of Peter, seeking "to confirm his brothers", what for him is "a program of life and [daily] action." The reading of the exhortation impresses intensely since it maintains a vigor and currency today that open toward tomorrow.

Who do you say that I am? PDF Print E-mail
Dec 30, 1999 at 12:00 AM
There’s a question that turns out to be fundamental in our approach to the mystery of the Lord Jesus. In the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked: “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?” “Who do you say that I am?” This question repeats itself throughout history and confronts men and women of all times, nations and cultures.

At the Threshold PDF Print E-mail
Dec 29, 1999 at 12:00 AM
Humanity finds itself submerged in pressing concerns. At the threshold of the 21st century the world is more “global” and technological, but marvelous scientific and technical advances haven’t responded to the serious problems that still weigh upon millions of people, and, by disconnecting themselves from their proper fundament and orientation, can become a threat to man.

The numerous canonizations which have taken place in the final years of the twentieth century constitute a reminder of the call to holiness that the Church continues to ring out. The path to holiness is not only for some, it’s for all. This is no novelty: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification,” we read in 1 Thessalonians.

Flannery O'Connor PDF Print E-mail

Despite her popularity, which instead of declining continues to increase, O'Connor is not well understood. The books and studies of her work that continue to be published from dissimilar perspectives are by no means few. There already exist tens of books, numerous chapters of many more, and perhaps hundreds of articles that try to capture the meaning of her life and work.

Resignation of the Human PDF Print E-mail
Nov 08, 1999 at 12:00 AM
Cases arise of people who act as though they really have resigned from their condition as human beings. This conscious or unconscious relinquishing from being a person has serious effects that seem not unconnected from the horrors committed against people during the 20th century. A retrospective glance justifies its being called the “century of horror.”

Japan’s Glorious Ecclesial History PDF Print E-mail
Oct 17, 1999 at 12:00 AM
It seems appropriate to talk a little about what has been called Japan’s "Christian Century." Perhaps it would be better to call it the Heroic Period of its Evangelization; because it was during this very period that centuries of the persecution of Christians began. Considering its example of heroic fidelity to the faith, for the glory of God, could we be mistaken in calling it a glorious history?

Through history many have rebelled against the contents and teachings of faith. Not few of them do so sinking into the dynamic of temptation. What is that? It is easy to find the answer: It is the presentation of an apparent good as the goal.

Church and Family PDF Print E-mail
Dec 30, 1990 at 12:00 AM
The theme of the family continues to acquire greater centrality in contemporary reflection to the measure in which factors which threaten it appear on the scene. Without doubt, nobody in his right mind can deny that the family is a basic and fundamental cell of social life. Today it's evident that there is a certain feedback between family and society. In order for there to be a healthy society there have to be healthy families; but the contrary also contains a high dosage of truth: a healthy society is a favorable social frame for healthy families.
